The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that it will reopen the registration period for federal beneficiaries who didn’t receive $500 per child payments earlier this year. In order to qualify, you must have had a child in 2019 that otherwise would have been claimed as a dependent.
Federal benefits recipients are encouraged to use the IRS.gov Non-filers tool starting Aug 15 through Sept 30 to receive the supplemental $500 payments.
Who is eligible:
U.S. citizens, permanent residents and qualifying resident aliens who:
- Have a valid Social Security number,
- Could not be claimed as a dependent of another taxpayer, and
- Had adjusted gross income under certain limits.
Who should use the Non-filers tool?
Use the Non-filers tool if:
You are not required to file a federal income tax return for 2019 for any reason including:
- Your income is less than $12,200
- You’re married filing jointly and together your income is less than $24,400
- You have no income
People with qualifying children who receive Social Security retirement, survivor, or disability benefits are eligible to use the Non-filers tool to claim the benefits.
The benefits will be issued by mid-October.
If you have used the Non-filers tool after May 5, no action is needed.
If you haven’t provided the information using the Non-filers tool, provide the information by Sept 30. If you filed or plan to file either a 2018 or 2019 tax return, do not use the Non-filers tool.
If you miss the Sept 30 deadline, you will need to wait until next year to claim it as a credit on the 2020 tax return.
